How Often Should You Color Gray Hair?
One of the first questions new clients ask me is, "How often will I need to come in?"
The honest answer is...it depends.
There isn't one schedule that's right for everyone. The best maintenance plan depends on how quickly your hair grows, how much gray you have, the color you're trying to maintain, and how noticeable new growth is to you.
Hair Growth Is Different for Everyone
Most hair grows about half an inch each month, but everyone's hair is a little different.
Some people notice their gray roots after just two or three weeks, while others are comfortable waiting six or even eight weeks between appointments.
Neither is right or wrong. It simply comes down to your hair and your personal preference.
Gray Coverage Usually Requires More Frequent Appointments
If your goal is complete gray coverage, most clients schedule appointments every four to six weeks.
That timing keeps new growth from becoming too noticeable and helps your color stay looking fresh and polished.
If you wait much longer, the regrowth becomes more obvious, and sometimes the appointment requires a little more time to achieve the same beautiful result.
Highlights Can Extend Time Between Appointments
For some women, adding highlights is a great way to soften new gray growth.
Because highlights create dimension throughout the hair, the contrast between your natural gray and your colored hair isn't as noticeable. That often allows clients to stretch the time between appointments without feeling like they need to rush back to the salon.
Your Maintenance Plan Should Fit Your Lifestyle
Some of my clients enjoy coming in every four weeks because they love having freshly colored roots.
Others have busy schedules and prefer a lower-maintenance plan that allows them to go a little longer between visits.
Neither choice is better. My job is to help you find a routine that fits your lifestyle while keeping your hair looking its best.
Beautiful Hair Is About Consistency
One of the biggest differences I see between hair that always looks polished and hair that feels like it's constantly being "fixed" is consistency.
When you're on a maintenance schedule that works for you, your appointments become easier to plan, your color stays more consistent, and your hair always looks fresh.
Let's Create the Right Schedule for You
Every client has different goals, and every maintenance plan should reflect that.
Whether you prefer complete gray coverage, highlights, or a combination of both, we'll create a schedule that keeps your hair looking beautiful without asking you to come in more often than you'd like.
